Planning a crane lift may not always require a full engineered lift plan — but if you are planning a crane lift, there is a good chance you need some level of lift planning.

While not every lift requires the same amount of documentation, many commercial, industrial, infrastructure, government, and military projects require a formal lift plan before work can begin.

What Is Considered a Critical Lift?

A critical lift is a lifting operation where the consequences of failure are unusually high, or where the lift involves added risk due to load weight, location, configuration, or site conditions.

On many projects, a lift may be considered critical when the planned load approaches a high percentage of the crane’s configured chart capacity. A common threshold used by many contractors and project owners is 75% or more of the crane’s rated capacity in the planned configuration.
